3月29日13时左右，新疆一中学正在月考考试中，此时突然发生了强烈地震，约5.6级。当时，楼体摇晃，玻璃摇晃发生巨响，地震在十几秒之内发生了两次，中断了考试。师生惊呼：“地震了！地震了……”该校教师迅速组织学生撤离，800多名中小学师生撤离到离教学楼50米开外的操场，安然无恙。
